The Vodafone stake deal proposed by French billionaire Xavier Niel has received approval from India’s competition regulator. His investment vehicle, Vega SAS, plans to acquire 16.2% of Vodafone Group for about £4.4 billion in cash.

Vodafone stake deal clears Indian review

India’s Competition Commission announced its approval on October 30, 2026. The regulator’s clearance covers Vega’s acquisition of a stake in Vodafone Group; the transaction has not yet been completed.

Vega has no business presence or operations in India. Vodafone operates in the country through Vodafone Idea, which provides fixed-line and mobile telecommunications services.

Investment terms and ownership

Vega announced a binding agreement in July to buy the holding from Emirates Telecommunications Group. If completed, the purchase would make Vega Vodafone’s largest shareholder.

Vega is wholly owned by Maya SAS, a French company controlled by Niel’s family. Niel is the founder of telecom company Iliad, and Vega was established specifically to hold Vodafone shares.
