The Travancore Devaswom Board has announced Sabarimala life insurance cover of ₹2 lakh for the families of pilgrims who die during their visit, ahead of the pilgrimage season beginning November 17, 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • The board will pay the entire premium from its Welfare Fund and expects the season’s cost to be around ₹1 crore.
  • Pilgrims’ nominee details will be collected during virtual queue booking, the board said.

How Sabarimala life insurance will work

Board president K Jayakumar announced the scheme on October 30 after a board meeting, saying it was introduced in association with Life Insurance Corporation of India. He said life insurance was being offered to Sabarimala pilgrims for the first time; accident insurance had been provided previously.

The nominee’s name and relationship to the pilgrim will be collected during virtual queue booking. A 2025 board notice concerning Sabarimala Virtual Q booking counters provides background on the booking system, but does not describe the new insurance scheme.

The announcement did not specify a claims procedure, exclusions or a precise date when coverage begins.

Preparations for the pilgrimage

Jayakumar said reception desks would be set up at Nilakkal and Pampa, and maintenance and repairs at Sabarimala were expected to be completed before November 10.

The board is also preparing supplies of Aravana, a sweet offering made primarily from rice and jaggery. Jayakumar said production was running around the clock at 2 lakh tins a day, with a new production unit expected to begin operating on November 3 or 4.

Next milestone

The pilgrimage season is scheduled to begin on November 17.
