Crypto meme games could become a new outlet for speculative trading as artificial intelligence makes them cheaper and faster to build, according to Illuvium co-founder Kieran Warwick. He predicts as many as 100,000 could launch within a year, while warning that many may last only days and leave players with losses.
Key Takeaways
- Warwick says AI can reduce development of speculative crypto games to days and around $1,000.
- Gaming executives question whether disposable games can retain users or overcome weak demand.
- Lower development costs could also broaden the selection of games, Animoca Brands CEO Robby Yung says.

Crypto meme games could turn rapid development into speculation
Warwick said games resembling Wolf Game and Fishing Frenzy, in which players compete for financial rewards, previously took months to develop. AI tools, he said, have sharply reduced the time and expense needed to create similar products.
His forecast is not simply for more games. He expects repeat creators to release short-lived titles designed to operate just long enough to generate a profit, attracting some of the same traders who speculate on memecoins.
“Like you have serial deployers of memes, you’ll get serial deployers of games,” Warwick said. Asked whether a flood of such titles would ultimately help the crypto gaming ecosystem, his answer was “probably not.”
The memecoin comparison carries a warning
The precedent is the token-creation boom enabled by Pump.fun and similar launchpads in 2024. According to CoinGecko figures, memecoins reached a combined market capitalization of $150.6 billion in December 2024, then fell nearly 69% to $47.2 billion by November 2025.
Warwick expects a comparable speculative wave in games, with the potential for both large gains and severe losses. That prospect contrasts with the longer-term model he favors: high-quality games with ownership features underneath.
Illuvium’s flagship Overworld has been in development for more than six years, Warwick said. A revamped full release is targeted for the first quarter of 2027, rather than being a completed launch.
Animoca Brands CEO Robby Yung also questioned the durability of low-effort meme games. He said user retention remains essential to gaming and doubted such products would become a lasting category.
More supply may not solve the demand problem
Mirai Labs co-founder and CEO Corey Wilton raised a separate concern: whether enough players want crypto games at all. After releasing six or seven games, he said, his company concluded that demand within the Web3 market was insufficient.
DappRadar tracking showed $232.2 million in total value locked across 2,356 gaming decentralized applications. A basket of the top 50 gaming tokens had a combined market capitalization of $3.8 billion at the time of writing.
Yung acknowledged weak demand and altcoin liquidity, but argued that a limited selection of compelling games also makes it difficult to isolate crypto itself as the problem.
There are still examples of financial interest. Developers of Yield Fields, an upcoming Web3 farming game built on the Robinhood chain, raised an estimated $8.3 million through sales of digital land NFTs on Oct. 14. The game was scheduled to launch at the end of October.
AI adoption extends beyond disposable games
The Blockchain Game Alliance’s 2025 survey of 506 industry professionals found that 32.8% said their companies had implemented or experimented with AI for game design and content creation.
Yung compared cheaper AI-assisted development with the rise of mobile gaming around 2010, when lower costs and faster production encouraged more studios to participate. In his view, the result could be a wider range of games at different quality levels, giving players more choice rather than merely flooding the market with weak products.
