A journal turns single trades into data you can learn from. Record each trade when you open it, not afterwards.
For each trade:
• Date, asset, long or short
• Entry, stop and planned exit
• Position size and amount at risk
• Why you entered, in one or two sentences
• Result after fees, and the result in R (result ÷ amount at risk)
Example: you risked $100 and made $250, so the result is +2.5R. A loss stopped at your plan is −1R.
Monthly review:
• Win rate, average win and average loss in R
• Expectancy = win rate × average win − loss rate × average loss. With 40% wins at 2R and 60% losses at 1R: 0.4 × 2 − 0.6 × 1 = +0.2R per trade.
• Which setups or habits caused the biggest losses
