SoftBank AI investment plans reportedly include $50 billion for Malaysia, targeting artificial intelligence, emerging technologies and data centers. As of October 26, 2026, that amount remains proposed spending rather than a confirmed commitment; a separate agreement signed earlier in October establishes exploratory work on infrastructure in Sarawak.
SoftBank AI investment plans span potential Malaysian sites
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said SoftBank chief Masayoshi Son had identified potential investment locations in Kuching, Sarawak, and peninsular Malaysia. The locations describe the possible scope of the expansion, not approved construction projects.
Malaysia is seeking to become a major regional AI and data-center hub by 2030. The country recorded about 385.7 billion ringgit, or $94 billion, in data-center-related investments between 2021 and the first half of 2026. Google, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft have also announced multibillion-dollar investments in the country.
Signed Sarawak framework does not commit project funding
On October 8, 2026, SoftBank, Grab and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad, known as PETROS, signed a framework agreement for AI infrastructure in Sarawak. The companies agreed to develop a phased roadmap and explore AI computing and services, advanced technologies, robotics and local workforce development.
SoftBank would contribute technology and AI expertise, Grab its regional digital ecosystem, and PETROS energy-resource experience and enabling infrastructure. The announcement does not specify a $50 billion investment.
The framework does not obligate the companies to enter definitive agreements or implement the project. SoftBank identified financing, approvals, suitable land, reliable power, connectivity and customer demand among the uncertainties. The confirmed next step is developing the roadmap, rather than beginning a funded construction program.
