KOSPI and Nikkei extended their opening gains during trading on October 27, 2026, as major South Korean chipmakers and Japanese technology shares advanced. South Korea’s benchmark rose 4.02% in a later intraday snapshot, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 2.13%; neither figure represents a closing result.
KOSPI and Nikkei build on strong openings
The KOSPI opened 3.46% higher at 5,658.65 points, while the Nikkei 225 rose 0.61% to 62,569.08 points at the start of trading. Both subsequently posted larger percentage gains, although corresponding index levels and exact observation times were not provided for the later readings.
The Nikkei 225 index methodology describes a price-weighted benchmark comprising 225 stocks from the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime Market. It measures a selected group of Japanese equities rather than the entire market.
Chipmakers advance as Nomura backs memory outlook
SK Hynix climbed more than 7% and Samsung Electronics gained more than 5%. In Japan, SoftBank Group rose more than 5%, while memory-chip producer Kioxia advanced more than 2%.
The gains came after Nomura Securities issued an October 25 assessment arguing that concerns about artificial-intelligence investment prospects were excessive. Nomura forecast that memory-chip shortages would persist until 2028, citing resilient AI capital spending and supply constraints.
That shortage outlook is Nomura’s forecast, not a confirmed supply outcome. The share-price moves alone do not establish how much the assessment contributed to the rally.
