The KOSPI surge exceeded 4% on October 27, 2026, taking South Korea’s benchmark stock index to 5,702.91 points. Korea Exchange activated its sidecar mechanism after KOSPI 200 futures rose 5%, temporarily restricting program buying rather than halting the entire stock market.

KOSPI surge includes sharp technology-stock gains

Samsung Electronics shares rose more than 4%, while SK Hynix gained more than 6%. SK Square and Samsung Electro-Mechanics each advanced more than 8%. The index level and stock moves represent the reported market snapshot, not confirmed closing figures.

Separately, Bank of Korea officials said third-quarter GDP data had led to a 0.35-percentage-point upward revision to the country’s economic growth forecast. They also expected private consumption to recover gradually from the fourth quarter of 2026 through the first quarter of 2027. Those comments describe the officials’ economic outlook, rather than establishing a cause for the share-price gains.

What the sidecar restriction covers

Korea Exchange’s program-trading sidecar rules specify that a move of at least 5% in the reference futures price, sustained for one minute, triggers a five-minute suspension of the effectiveness of program-buy orders for an upward move. A downward move triggers the corresponding restriction on program-sell orders.

The mechanism is designed to limit the impact of program trading during abrupt market moves. It is narrower than a marketwide trading halt: the October 27 activation concerned program buying, not all share transactions. Under the rules, affected orders become eligible for execution in their received sequence after the five-minute suspension.
