Hyundai SUV sales in India are set for a push after the launch of the Bayon, with the automaker targeting at least 250,000 combined annual sales of the Bayon and Creta in 2027.

Key Takeaways

  • The Bayon launched at a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 9.99 lakh.
  • Hyundai expects overall sales growth of more than 8% in the second half of FY27.
  • A mass-market electric vehicle is scheduled to arrive in early 2027.

Hyundai SUV sales target follows Bayon launch

Managing Director Tarun Garg said the 250,000-unit goal was a baseline for the two models as Hyundai seeks to maintain its leadership in the mid-size SUV segment. The Bayon launched on October 26, 2026, and sits between the Venue compact SUV and the Creta in Hyundai’s lineup.

Hyundai will manufacture the Bayon at its Chennai plant. Garg said the model would help increase use of the plant after Venue production moved to the company’s new Pune facility.

Creta sales under pressure

Creta sales fell more than 9% from a year earlier to 89,727 units in the first half of FY27, while industry volumes in the segment rose more than 50%. Garg attributed some of the pressure to limited supplies of diesel models and said the diesel Creta had a waiting period of more than one month.

The mid-size utility vehicle segment, including SUVs and MPVs between 4 and 4.4 meters long, accounted for around 900,000 units in FY26, based on Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers data. The segment contributed nearly 35% of Hyundai’s domestic sales that year.

Growth plans and electric vehicle

Garg expects India’s car market to grow by about 5% to 6% in the second half of FY27 and said Hyundai is aiming for growth of more than 8% over the same period. He also expects SUVs to account for nearly 75% of the company’s total sales starting in FY28, compared with 68% to 69% currently.

In May 2025, Hyundai announced plans to launch 26 models in India by the end of the decade, including 20 internal combustion engine vehicles and six EVs. The lineup is to include new models, full model changes and enhancements to existing products.

Next milestone

The next planned launch is Hyundai’s mass-market electric vehicle, expected in early 2027.
