Trump economic approval fell to a net minus 31 in an October 2026 survey of registered voters, as concern about prices and declining support among key voter groups emerged ahead of the US midterm elections.

Key Takeaways

  • Economic disapproval reached 65%, while net economic approval fell from minus 21 in the first quarter of 2026.
  • The survey found a seven-point preference for Democratic control of Congress, though Republican respondents remained strongly supportive of their party.

Trump economic approval and voter concerns

The survey found increasing disapproval of President Donald Trump’s handling of inflation. Registered voters worried that Congress would not do enough to bring down prices, regardless of which party controlled it.

Among all registered voters, Trump’s overall net approval fell from minus 7 at the start of his second term to minus 19 in the latest survey. Net approval measures the balance between approval and disapproval.

The declines were also evident among groups that had helped Trump win in 2024. Net overall approval among Latino voters fell from minus 22 to minus 38, while it declined from minus 28 to minus 53 among voters aged 18 to 34.

Congressional preferences and the survey

The seven-point preference for Democratic control of Congress was three points higher than in the July survey. That did not mean Republican voters had abandoned their party: 87% of Republicans favored a Republican-controlled Congress in October, up from 85% in July.

Among respondents who voted for Trump, net approval fell from plus 85 in 2025 to plus 65. Still, 82% of Republicans approved of the president, as did 90% of respondents who identified with the MAGA movement.

The nationwide survey covered 1,000 registered voters from October 14 to 18 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Democratic pollster Hart Research Associates and Republican pollster Public Opinion Strategies co-led the survey.
