Chennai Super Kings have parted ways with batting coach Mike Hussey and appointed Gareth Batty as assistant coach as the franchise reshapes its staff ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season.

Chennai Super Kings overhaul coaching staff

The changes announced on October 26, 2026, end Hussey’s stint as batting coach, a role he took up in 2018 after playing six seasons for the franchise.

Bowling coach Eric Simons has also departed and has been replaced by former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma. Assistant coach Rajiv Kumar, fielding coach James Foster and physio Tommy Simsek will not be part of the staff from IPL 2027.

Batty joins under new head coach Zaheer Khan

Former England spinner Gareth Batty joins as assistant coach under Zaheer Khan, who has taken over as head coach from Stephen Fleming. Batty and Zaheer previously spent time together at English county side Worcestershire.

Batty guided Surrey to three successive County Championship titles from 2022 to 2024 and also worked as an assistant coach with MI London in the Hundred.

The coaching changes follow a run of lower finishes for the five-time IPL champions. After winning the league in 2023, Chennai finished fifth in 2024, 10th in 2025 and eighth in 2026. Fleming has moved on to coach England’s Test team.
