Iran policy will remain unchanged whether or not war resumes with the United States and Israel, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on October 25, 2026. His remarks came amid threats of renewed attacks and continuing restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran policy and the threat of renewed war

Speaking at a televised event in Tehran, Araghchi said he was already thinking about the postwar period. “Whether there is war or not, our policies remain the same,” he said.

Two days earlier, US President Donald Trump said Washington “may do another little Epic Fury,” referring to the US-Israeli campaign against Iran that began on February 28.

An April 8 ceasefire between Iran and the United States ended the most intense fighting, although sporadic exchanges continued in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The military flare-ups have eased in recent weeks.

Hormuz shipping and the failed settlement

Iran has claimed control of the strait, a key route for global energy supplies, since the war began and has regularly targeted vessels attempting to cross without its authorization. The United States has maintained a naval counter-blockade on Iranian ports.

Araghchi said shipping routes and management of the strait would no longer be the same. He also called for the complete absence of foreign forces from the region.

In June, Iran and the United States agreed to a memorandum of understanding setting out a pathway to a permanent settlement. The agreement later unraveled as each side accused the other of violations, and Tehran has since called for a return to it.
