Punjab alliance talks between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) are centered on how to share assembly seats and whether to include the splinter SAD (Punar Surjit) faction, people familiar with the discussions said.

Punjab alliance talks weigh a larger BJP share

The BJP could receive around 45 assembly seats under a possible arrangement, compared with the 23 it traditionally contested during its previous alliance with the SAD. The figures remain part of discussions, not a confirmed agreement.

The SAD is understood to be open to a larger share for the BJP while seeking to remain the senior partner in any eventual alliance.

Splinter faction’s role remains unresolved

Some senior BJP leaders favor bringing SAD (Punar Surjit) into the proposed alliance. The SAD has reservations about giving seats to the faction and would prefer that any accommodation come from the BJP’s allocation.

One formula under discussion would have the BJP give some of its allotted seats to SAD (Punar Surjit), limiting the effect on the SAD’s share. The faction is led by former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh and includes several leaders with a Panthic background.
