The Amazon Globalstar deal has won approval from the Federal Communications Commission, clearing a regulatory step in Amazon’s planned $11.5 billion acquisition of the satellite operator. The FCC announced its approval on October 27, 2026; the transaction has not yet closed.
What the Amazon Globalstar deal would add
Amazon’s acquisition agreement would give its Leo satellite business access to Globalstar’s satellite operations, infrastructure and mobile-satellite spectrum. Amazon plans to use those assets to add direct-to-device services, which connect phones and other devices to satellites.
The FCC said the combined assets would support Amazon Leo’s entry into that market and enable it to offer fixed and mobile services. Amazon has launched more than 300 Leo satellites since April 2025 and aims to deploy about 3,200 in low Earth orbit by 2029.
Apple services and closing conditions
Globalstar provides satellite connectivity for Apple features including Emergency SOS and Find My. Amazon and Apple have agreed that Amazon Leo will continue supporting satellite services for supported iPhone and Apple Watch models.
Apple invested about $1.5 billion in Globalstar in 2024, gaining a 20% equity stake. The FCC said Amazon plans to acquire that stake. Apple accounted for about 63% of Globalstar’s revenue in 2025.
Amazon said when it announced the agreement that it expected the transaction to close in 2027, subject to closing conditions including regulatory approvals and certain Globalstar satellite milestones.
