The Nikkei 225 rose nearly 2% in Tokyo trading on October 27, 2026, as gains in semiconductor-related shares followed a US chip stock rally and Anthropic’s filing for a proposed US initial public offering.
Nikkei 225 gains led by Advantest
The benchmark rose 1.91% to 63,374.45 as of 0142 GMT, after gaining as much as 2.4% earlier in the session. It was on course to end a three-session losing streak. The broader Topix rose 0.61% to 3,997.09.
Chip-testing equipment maker Advantest jumped 10%, providing the largest boost to the Nikkei. SoftBank Group gained 6.94%, and chipmaking equipment manufacturer Tokyo Electron rose 3.35%.
The advance was less pronounced across the wider market. On the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime Market, 49% of more than 1,500 traded stocks rose, while 47% fell and 2% were unchanged. Drugmaker Daiichi Sankyo dropped 6.53%, the largest percentage decline on the Nikkei.
US chip rally and AI filing in focus
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 2.8% in the previous US session. The Japanese technology gains also followed Anthropic’s Form S-1 filing, submitted on October 26 for its proposed US listing.
Anthropic disclosed rapid revenue growth alongside steep losses, highlighting the costs of developing advanced AI systems. The filing and the US chip rally coincided with the Japanese share gains, but do not establish their cause.
Daisuke Hashizume, a senior strategist at Daiwa Securities, said investors were cautious ahead of earnings from major US technology companies, including Alphabet and Microsoft, due later in the week.
