The Bank of Japan said on October 30, 2026, that it will accelerate BOJ ETF sales from January 2027, targeting annual disposals of approximately ¥860 billion ($5.45 billion) on a book-value basis.

BOJ ETF sales plan and timeline

The central bank said the planned sales would be equivalent to around 0.1% of the market’s trading value. It estimates that disposing of the holdings will take approximately 43 years, down from an earlier estimate of 112 years.

The annual target is measured using book value, while the bank’s holdings have risen in market value alongside gains in Japanese equities. The two measures should not be treated as interchangeable.

Equity holdings and market context

The BOJ accumulated its exchange-traded fund holdings over years of monetary easing. The revised plan continues a gradual withdrawal from that portfolio rather than a rapid liquidation.

The BOJ’s September 2025 assessment of Japanese equities noted that the Tokyo Stock Price Index had risen significantly. That assessment predates the revised sales plan.
