The RUNE token rose more than 13% on October 30, 2026, after Binance confirmed a $6.3 billion hack. The gain coincided with an investigator’s finding that stolen funds had passed through THORChain, the cross-chain swap protocol associated with RUNE.
RUNE token rises as investigator traces funds
RUNE reached $0.67, up from a local low of $0.59 at 12:20 a.m. UTC, TradingView data showed. The timing of the rise does not establish what caused it.
On-chain investigator ZachXBT said funds stolen from Binance and from Bitget in September had moved through THORChain before being combined at the same Ethereum address. ZachXBT said the Bitget attack had been attributed to North Korea-linked TraderTraitor; blockchain analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis have also linked the Binance hack to the group.
THORChain’s controls on swaps
THORChain allows users to exchange assets across blockchains. After the $388 million Bitget hack, CEO Gracy Chen asked the protocol to block the attacker’s addresses. THORChain rejected the request, saying it had no mechanism to block individual swaps.
The protocol said node operators can instead pause trading for an entire blockchain or across its network. THORChain’s security documentation describes chain-specific trading halts as well as controls for pausing trading across the network.
The protocol was also used to launder funds from the $1.4 billion Bybit hack in February 2025. A reversal of an Ether trading halt following that attack contributed to disagreements among THORChain participants, including the departure of core developer Pluto.
