Cincinnati Financial earnings fell in the third quarter of 2026, with net income declining to $459 million from $1.122 billion a year earlier. The insurer attributed most of the decrease to lower net investment gains.
Key Takeaways
- Third-quarter non-GAAP operating income slipped to $443 million from $449 million.
- The property-casualty combined ratio rose to 90.9% from 88.2%, including a higher contribution from catastrophe losses.
- Nine-month operating income increased 38% to $997 million.
Cincinnati Financial earnings and investment gains
The company’s third-quarter results show that the $663 million year-over-year decline in net income included a $657 million after-tax decrease in net investment gains and a $41 million after-tax decline in property-casualty underwriting profit. A $24 million after-tax increase in investment income partly offset those decreases.
Third-quarter revenue fell to $3.047 billion from $3.726 billion, while earned premiums rose 5% to $2.690 billion. Diluted net income per share was $2.96, compared with $7.11 a year earlier.
Catastrophe losses and underwriting
The property-casualty combined ratio increased to 90.9% from 88.2%. The measure compares claims and expenses with earned premiums; a ratio below 100% generally indicates an underwriting profit.
CEO Stephen M. Spray said catastrophe losses contributed 7.0 points more to the ratio than in the prior-year quarter. Favorable development of reserves for prior accident years provided a 3.6-point benefit, compared with 0.9 points a year earlier.
For the first nine months of 2026, the combined ratio improved to 95.8% from 98.4%. Spray said the result was within the company’s long-term target range of 92% to 98%.
Nine-month growth and balance sheet
Net income for the first nine months rose 16% to $1.988 billion. Over the same period, non-GAAP operating income increased to $997 million from $723 million.
Through September, nine-month net written premiums grew 7% at Cincinnati Specialty Underwriters, 13% at Cincinnati Global Underwriting and 11% at Cincinnati Re. Book value per share was $105.42 at September 30, up $3.07 from year-end 2025.
