A CATL power supply project in eastern China has begun a crossing of the Nanjing-Hangzhou High-Speed Railway, a step toward connecting a planned battery production facility to the grid. State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company said drones carried guide ropes across the railway twice to prepare for installing a ground wire and a conductor.
Key Takeaways
- The crossing is part of a planned double-circuit 220 kV line in Liyang, Jiangsu.
- The CATL New Energy Phase VI project has an expected electricity load of approximately 210,500 kW.
- The two circuits and two ground wires are planned to cross the railway over four nights.
CATL power supply crossing faces a narrow window
The railway crossing sits within a 469-meter span between towers N10 and N11. The same span crosses a 110 kV line, the Nanxi River and the G25 Changchun-Shenzhen Expressway, requiring coordination with existing infrastructure and traffic.
Railway construction is scheduled between midnight and 4 a.m. each day. After the railway is blocked, the overhead power system is confirmed to be switched off and grounded, and inspections are completed, about three hours remain for the main stringing work.
Two circuits planned for battery project
The line runs from Ganxi Substation to the planned Shidai Substation, with two circuits carried on the same towers. Crews plan to use tensioning equipment to deploy, tension and attach conductors and ground wires in stages.
Chu Guowei, director of the utility’s project management center, said CATL New Energy Phase VI plans include cell production lines and module and battery pack assembly lines. Under the connection plan, either circuit would be able to carry the project’s full load if the other were withdrawn.
Next milestone
The next planned step is to complete the railway crossing deployment over four nights, followed by staged tensioning and attachment of the wires.
