Stan Wawrinka retirement became official on October 27, 2026, when the three-time Grand Slam champion lost to Jiri Lehecka in the first round of the Basel Open, ending his 24-year professional tennis career.

Stan Wawrinka retirement in Basel

Wawrinka, 41, had announced earlier in the season that the ATP 500 tournament in his home country would be his last as a professional. Lehecka, ranked 21st, won 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).

The Czech player broke Wawrinka’s serve in the 11th game of the first set and closed it with an ace. The second set went to a tie-break, which Lehecka won to seal the match.

Three Grand Slam titles

The former world No. 3 won his first major at the 2014 Australian Open, defeating Rafael Nadal in the final. He then beat Novak Djokovic in the 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open finals.

Wawrinka also won the Davis Cup for Switzerland and doubles gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics alongside compatriot Roger Federer.
