James Anderson will leave Lancashire after the county decided not to renew his contract, prompting former England teammate Stuart Broad to criticize how the club handled the departure.

James Anderson Leaves After Award-Winning Season

Lancashire announced the decision in October 2026, following a season in which Anderson took 50 County Championship wickets at an average of 17. The 44-year-old was also named the club’s player of the year.

Anderson indicated that the decision was not his. “If it was up to me it wouldn’t have ended like this,” he said, while wishing the players and fans well.

Broad Questions Club’s Handling

Speaking on the For The Love of Cricket podcast, Broad called Lancashire’s handling of the news disrespectful and said a player of Anderson’s stature deserved a better send-off.

Anderson retired from Test cricket in 2024 with 704 wickets, the most by a fast bowler in the format. Only spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne took more Test wickets.
