Maruti Suzuki India said on October 27, 2026, that it supports the auto industry’s request to delay the rollout of BS-VII rules, giving manufacturers time to discuss their potential impact on the car market with the government.
BS-VII rules and the proposed timeline
India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued draft Bharat Stage-VII rules dated October 12. The proposal calls for tyre-abrasion requirements and brake-particle emission limits for passenger cars from April 2031.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has reportedly asked the ministry to introduce those brake and tyre requirements in April 2035 instead, following feedback from suppliers. The ministry’s draft envisages three implementation phases, starting in April 2029, April 2031 and April 2035.
Maruti expects an effect on prices
Maruti Suzuki Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said during a post-earnings call that the norms would affect pricing, though details remain under discussion. SIAM members plan to consult the government on a roadmap, he said.
Takeuchi said the industry needed to balance environmental concerns with maintaining sales momentum. He also said Maruti was maintaining sales above the previous year’s level, despite a high comparison base following GST reforms in September 2025.
