Singapore Management University launched SMU China in Shenzhen on October 22, 2026, opening its first centre in China and announcing four cooperation agreements focused on research, talent and business connections.

Key Takeaways

  • The Shenzhen centre is SMU’s first overseas centre outside Southeast Asia.
  • Four memoranda of understanding cover areas including student opportunities, academic research and enterprise internationalisation.

What SMU China will do

Located in China Resources Tower in Shenzhen’s Nanshan District, the centre will serve as the university’s principal point of contact in China for prospective students, universities and organisations. Victor Huang is its country director.

SMU says the centre will connect organisations in China and Southeast Asia and introduce businesses expanding into Southeast Asia to its existing centres in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The university also intends to bring knowledge from Shenzhen into its teaching and research.

Four agreements announced at launch

The memoranda of understanding set out areas for cooperation rather than completed projects. They range from support for student internships and employment to joint research and help for enterprises seeking to expand internationally.

One agreement links SMU’s School of Accountancy with the School of Management and Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. Their planned cooperation includes research on social media and technological developments in financial markets, as well as short-term exchanges of faculty and doctoral students.

Existing university ties

SMU says it collaborates with 60 universities in China and has 7,000 alumni there. Since 2011, more than 850 of its students have interned with over 350 companies in China.

The university also runs joint Doctor of Business Administration programmes in Shenzhen with Peking University HSBC Business School and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.
