The Oleshky truce took effect on October 27, 2026, with Ukraine and Russia pledging to pause fire in a limited area to allow humanitarian aid into the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city.

What the Oleshky truce covers

Both sides said they would observe the ceasefire from 3 a.m. local time, or 0100 GMT. Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had ceased fire in the Kherson sector, while Ukrainian human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets said the sides were adhering to their commitments. A reduction in fighting could not immediately be independently verified.

Oleshky, in southern Ukraine’s Kherson region, was seized by Russian forces in 2022. Former residents said earlier in 2026 that people remaining there were starving, lacked medicine and could not easily leave.

Aid operation details remain unclear

US First Lady Melania Trump said last week that she had brokered the ceasefire. She said Russian and Ukrainian civilian officials would visit residents to assess their needs, and that people wishing to evacuate would receive coordinated support and transportation.

Russia, Ukraine and the United States have not said who will monitor the truce or provided details of the humanitarian operation.

The ceasefire applies only to a limited area. In Kyiv on Tuesday morning, the Ukrainian air force issued warnings about ballistic missiles headed toward the capital. Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said a strike hit the Southern Bridge and damaged its metro infrastructure.

Next milestone

Separate peace talks involving Washington, Moscow and Kyiv are set to resume in November after a months-long hiatus.
