European shares edged higher in early trading on October 29, 2026, as gains in energy stocks offset weakness in technology shares ahead of a European Central Bank policy decision.
European shares rise before ECB decision
The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.11% to 644.80 points by 0806 GMT. London’s FTSE 100 gained 0.3% as investors assessed corporate earnings and awaited the central bank’s announcement.
Later that day, the ECB’s monetary policy decision kept its three key interest rates unchanged. The deposit facility rate remained at 2.50%, matching the outcome widely expected before the announcement. The early share prices were recorded before the decision.
Energy gains offset technology weakness
Shell shares rose 2.6% after the oil company reported third-quarter net profit of $10.81 billion, its highest since 2022 and above market expectations. Shell also increased its share buyback programme. The energy sector rose 1%.
Airbus shares advanced 3.2% after the aircraft maker maintained its full-year forecasts and production plans despite mixed third-quarter earnings.
Technology stocks fell 0.7%. Alphabet shares were down 10.8% in US premarket trading after the Google parent reported revenue below expectations, as investors also scrutinised spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.
