Indonesia is seeking gasoline from India and China to bolster Indonesia fuel supplies as Middle East tensions disrupt energy markets. Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia is scheduled to travel to India in the week of October 30, 2026, for talks, but has not disclosed the quantities sought.

Indonesia fuel supplies face disruption

Lahadalia said President Prabowo Subianto had instructed him to find alternative energy sources because the duration of Middle East tensions was uncertain. The minister also plans to visit China, although no date for that trip was specified.

Indonesia’s Ombudsman said earlier in October that fuel disruptions had been reported in provinces including Bali, North Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, West Papua and West Kalimantan. Vehicle queues stretched to around one kilometer in several locations.

Government changes import procurement

The search for supplies follows a presidential regulation signed by Prabowo. Under the revised energy import procurement system, Indonesia is shifting from tenders between businesses toward direct government-to-government and government-to-business arrangements for crude oil, fuel and liquefied petroleum gas.

The Energy Ministry said the government has also tasked Lahadalia with seeking long-term supply contracts. Indonesia continues to import several grades of gasoline, including RON 90.
