GSK cancer trials could expand substantially in 2027, with the British drugmaker expecting its portfolio of roughly 15 clinical-stage cancer medicines to come close to doubling.

GSK cancer trials and the 2027 outlook

Hesham Abdullah, GSK’s head of oncology research and development, said the company could have 19 to 20 late-stage oncology studies underway in 2027. Some candidates are being moved directly from early-stage to late-stage studies to accelerate development.

The figures are expectations, not completed trial starts. The number of studies is also a separate measure from the number of medicines in clinical development.

Rebuilding the oncology portfolio

GSK is rebuilding its cancer-drug business after leaving the field more than a decade ago. The effort is part of CEO Luke Miels’ push to reassure investors as patents on the company’s blockbuster HIV medicines approach expiry.

In July 2026, GSK said it expected to have more than 20 late-stage studies across its portfolio by the end of that year. Three of seven medicines identified for faster development were cancer drugs. The oncology segment contributed £1.08 billion, or $1.44 billion, in the first half of 2026.
