JLR India expects local assembly and price cuts of up to ₹34 lakh on select Land Rover Defender variants to help it narrow its sales gap with BMW in the country’s luxury car market.

Key Takeaways

  • The 3.0-litre petrol and diesel X-Dynamic HSE variants now cost ₹1.18 crore, down from ₹1.52 crore.
  • JLR India retailed 6,031 vehicles in FY26, behind BMW India’s 17,301 and Mercedes-Benz India’s 19,363.
  • Managing Director Rajan Amba expects local Defender assembly to boost annual volumes by 20%.

JLR India lowers Defender prices

The price of the 3.0-litre petrol and diesel X-Dynamic HSE variants has fallen by about 22%. The 2.0-litre petrol X-Dynamic HSE variant is now priced at ₹99 lakh, compared with ₹1.135 crore previously.

India will be the second country after Slovakia to assemble the Defender locally. Amba said lower prices could bring the SUV within reach of buyers who had previously found it beyond their budgets. JLR sells around 3,000 Defenders a year in India on average.

Sales gap and market outlook

JLR India’s FY26 retail sales fell 2%, leaving it third among the country’s luxury carmakers. Amba said he expects the company to bridge some of the gap with second-placed BMW, although he acknowledged that it remains substantial.

The Defender, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport account for 88% to 90% of JLR’s sales in India. The company has installed annual production capacity of 12,000 units in the country, Amba said.

Amba expects India’s luxury car market to grow by at least 15% in calendar 2026. He also said uncertainty over potential price reductions under trade agreements was prompting some customers to defer purchases.
