Microfinance recovery harassment of farmers will prompt police action against senior company officials in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, after a farmer was found dead in a lender’s office in Nanded.

Microfinance recovery directive to police

Fadnavis said all superintendents of police had been instructed to immediately register a case if a microfinance company is found harassing a farmer over repayment. Where companies threaten or use force against farmers, police should take action and file a case against their top officials, he said.

The chief minister also said he had asked the Reserve Bank of India to tell microfinance companies not to use coercive measures. He warned that the state government would act against companies if such steps were taken.

Farmer’s death prompted warning

The directive followed the death of a farmer in Nanded who owed ₹10,000. Company officials had taken him from his home, and he was found hanging in the firm’s office a few days later.

His family filed a case alleging abduction and murder. They claim company representatives kidnapped and killed him before staging his death as a suicide. Those allegations have not been established as fact.
