Revised NPS PoP charges will take effect on December 1, 2026, rather than the previously scheduled October 1, after India’s pension regulator extended the implementation date for all schemes under the National Pension System and NPS Lite.
Key Takeaways
- The October 26 circular changes the implementation date; the other provisions announced in August remain unchanged.
- The revised structure includes a one-time onboarding charge and an annual charge based on assets under management.
- Dormant accounts will not attract PoP charges.
How NPS PoP charges will work
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) announced the revised Point of Presence (PoP) charge structure on August 28, 2026. Its October 26 circular deferred implementation by two months without changing the other provisions.
A subscriber registering through a PoP will pay a one-time onboarding charge of ₹200 per Permanent Retirement Account Number. Central Recordkeeping Agencies will recover the amount through cancellation of units at ₹50 per quarter, rather than deducting ₹200 at once.
For subscribers who complete onboarding entirely through a digital, non-face-to-face route, a one-time charge of ₹100 may apply, depending on terms determined by the PFRDA when the PoP registers and subsequently.
For all schemes other than dormant accounts, an annual charge of 0.20% of assets under management will be adjusted through the net asset value and paid to the PoP quarterly.
Dormant accounts and minimum contributions
Dormant accounts will not attract PoP charges. The regulator defines dormancy using accounts identified by a unique Permanent Account Number across Central Recordkeeping Agencies: after a contribution in one quarter, there must be no contribution for four consecutive quarters, as assessed at the end of each quarter.
The circular also specifies a minimum contribution of ₹250 at onboarding and ₹10 for subsequent contributions.
