India LPG supply remained available during a disruption caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on October 27, 2026. He said higher domestic production and imports from a wider group of countries helped offset the loss of Gulf supplies.
Key Takeaways
- Puri said domestic LPG production rose from 34,000 to 55,000 metric tonnes per day.
- India expanded its LPG import sources from 27 to 41 countries, including Algeria.
- Cylinder bookings surged during the disruption, which Puri attributed to panic rather than increased consumption.
India LPG supply shifts to more sources
Speaking on the sidelines of the 29th Energy Technology and Innovation Meet, Puri said higher production, refining capacity and coordination across the energy supply chain helped manage the disruption.
The minister said the United States had become a major supplier. A deal signed in January provided for imports from the US equivalent to 10% of India’s LPG requirements. Puri said that, at the time of his remarks, 67% of India’s LPG imports came from the US.
Bookings rose as shortage rumours spread
Puri said rumours of shortages drove cylinder bookings to nearly 90 lakh, or 9 million, against normal average daily demand of 51 lakh to 52 lakh cylinders. He said the increase reflected panic-driven demand rather than consumption.
The petroleum secretary wrote to state chief secretaries, while state civil supplies departments conducted raids to check hoarding and diversion, Puri said. Authorities seized cylinders, after which bookings declined, he added.
