Indian Railways plans to launch a rail parcel service offering doorstep pickup and delivery in eight cities after a pilot. The service will connect customers with logistics providers through an app, while the railways transports parcels between stations.

Rail parcel service will use logistics partners

The planned service covers Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Pune. A launch date was not specified.

Customers will be able to book and pay online through the Rail Parcel App, Ghar se Ghar Tak. Selected logistics partners will handle pickup and delivery between customers’ doors and railway stations, and may also offer packaging and other services.

Booking and cancellation terms

The booking window will open 15 days before a train’s scheduled departure and close one day before departure. Logistics partners can hand consignments to railway staff up to one hour before the train leaves.

If a customer cancels before pickup, the rail freight will be refunded after a ₹10 clerkage charge. Refunds for pickup and delivery will depend on the logistics providers’ policies, which will be communicated at booking.
