How it is calculated
We take the 50 largest coins by market cap after removing Bitcoin and the coins listed below, compare each coin's 90-day price change with Bitcoin's, and report the share that did better as a score from 0 to 100. A tie does not count. The index is shown only when Bitcoin and at least 45 of the 50 coins have a 90-day value. A score of 75 or more is called altcoin season, 25 or less Bitcoin season.
Coins left out
Stablecoins are left out: coins tagged as stablecoins on CoinMarketCap, a short list of known stablecoins whose name has no currency word, coins with a currency word in the name whose price sits near a peg, and any coin trading within 1.5% of $1 with almost no daily move. Tokenized stocks, funds, gold and silver, and wrapped, bridged or staked copies of other coins are left out too, because their prices follow another asset.
What the altcoin season index tells you
The altcoin season index measures whether large altcoins have been doing better than Bitcoin. It looks at the 50 largest cryptocurrencies by market cap, after removing Bitcoin, stablecoins and coins that only mirror another asset, and counts how many rose more, or fell less, than Bitcoin over the past 90 days. The result is a score from 0 to 100.
A score of 75 or more is commonly called altcoin season: at least three in four large altcoins beat Bitcoin. A score of 25 or less is called Bitcoin season. Values in between mean neither side clearly led. Because the window is 90 days, the index moves slowly; the 30-day reading on our Bitcoin dominance page reacts faster to recent moves.
The index describes the past and does not predict prices. Every coin counts the same, so a strong run in a few large coins can matter less than many small moves. Other sites use different coin lists, exclusions and update times, so their index can differ from ours. The figures are not investment advice.

We take the 50 largest coins by market cap after removing Bitcoin, stablecoins, tokenized assets and wrapped or staked tokens, compare each coin's 90-day price change with Bitcoin's and report the share that did better, from 0 to 100.
Is it altcoin season now?
The page shows the current score and season. A score of 75 or more is called altcoin season and 25 or less Bitcoin season; anything in between is neither. The score is updated as our market data refreshes.
Why are stablecoins left out?
Stablecoins track a currency such as the US dollar, so they would almost never beat Bitcoin in a rising market and almost always beat it in a falling one. Counting them would tilt the score, so they are removed along with tokenized assets and wrapped tokens.
