How it is calculated
Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's market cap divided by the total market cap of the 4,174 coins in our data that report one. The altcoin season indicator takes the 50 largest coins after removing Bitcoin, stablecoins, tokenized assets and wrapped or staked tokens, and counts the share whose 30-day price change beat Bitcoin's.
What Bitcoin dominance and altcoin season tell you
Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's market capitalization divided by the market capitalization of the whole crypto market, shown as a percentage. We calculate it from the coins in our own market data, so the total covers the largest coins we track and can differ slightly from figures that include every listed token.
A rising dominance means Bitcoin's value is growing faster than the rest of the market, or falling more slowly. A falling dominance means other coins are gaining share. Stablecoins are part of the total, so money moving into stablecoins can lower Bitcoin's share even when the Bitcoin price does not change.
The altcoin season indicator counts how many of the 50 largest altcoins beat Bitcoin's price change over the past 30 days. Stablecoins, tokenized assets and wrapped or staked copies of other coins are left out. A score of 75 or more is commonly called altcoin season, and 25 or less Bitcoin season. Some other sites measure over 90 days, so their reading can differ from ours. Both measures describe the past and are not trading signals.
Frequently asked questions
How is Bitcoin dominance calculated here?
We divide Bitcoin's market cap by the sum of the market caps of all coins in our data that report one, then multiply by 100. Wrapped and staked tokens are included in the total, and coins outside our catalog are not counted.
What is altcoin season?
It is an informal name for a period when most large altcoins rise more than Bitcoin. This page calls it altcoin season when at least 75% of the top 50 altcoins beat Bitcoin over the past 30 days.
Why does this dominance figure differ from other websites?
Websites count different sets of coins and refresh at different times. Our total covers the coins in our own market data and leaves out smaller tokens outside it, which can make Bitcoin's share slightly higher than on sites that track more tokens.
