How the Bitcoin halving works

Bitcoin creates new coins as a reward for each block added to its blockchain. The rules cut this block reward in half every 210,000 blocks, an event called the halving. The first reward was 50 BTC. After four halvings it is 3.125 BTC, and the next halving at block 1,050,000 will lower it to 1.5625 BTC.

Because the network targets about one block every 10 minutes, 210,000 blocks take roughly four years, but blocks are found at an uneven pace. The countdown therefore combines the latest block height with the average time between blocks since the last halving to estimate a date. The estimate shifts as the pace of blocks changes: the halving happens at a fixed block, not on a fixed day.

Halvings slow the creation of new bitcoin until the reward reaches zero, which keeps the total supply just under 21 million BTC. Miners also collect transaction fees, which the halving does not change. This page reports the schedule and its history only and makes no prediction about prices.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next Bitcoin halving?

The next halving happens when block 1,050,000 is mined. The date on this page is an estimate from the current block height and the average block time since the last halving, so it can move by days or weeks as mining speed changes.

How many Bitcoin halvings have there been?

Four: at block 210,000 on 28 November 2012, block 420,000 on 9 July 2016, block 630,000 on 11 May 2020 and block 840,000 on 20 April 2024. Each one cut the block reward in half, from 50 BTC down to the current 3.125 BTC.

What happens when the block reward reaches zero?

The reward halves 33 times before it rounds down to zero, which on the 10-minute schedule is expected around the year 2140. After that, miners would be paid only through transaction fees. The total created by block rewards stops just below 21 million BTC.
