What the Fear & Greed Index measures

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index condenses several market signals into one number between 0 and 100. Low values mean the measured mood is fearful, and high values mean it is greedy. Alternative.me publishes one value per day and labels it Extreme fear, Fear, Neutral, Greed or Extreme greed. FinanceVelix does not calculate this index: we show the values Alternative.me has published, with their dates.

According to Alternative.me, the index focuses on Bitcoin. It compares Bitcoin's volatility and drawdowns with their 30-day and 90-day averages and also weighs trading volume and market momentum, activity on social media, Bitcoin's share of the total crypto market and Google search trends. A survey component is listed as paused.

Read the number as a summary of recent market behaviour, not as a forecast. A fearful reading usually follows falling prices and rising volatility, and a greedy reading usually follows a rally. The same level can last for days, and the market can stay near either end of the scale for long periods. The 30-day chart and the daily table show how quickly the mood has changed.
