How crypto profit and ROI are calculated
The calculator first works out how many coins the investment buys after the buy fee: coins = amount invested × (1 − buy fee) ÷ buy price. The sale value is coins × sell price, and the sell fee is deducted from it to give the proceeds.
Profit or loss = proceeds − amount invested, and ROI = profit or loss ÷ amount invested × 100. Because both fees reduce the result, ROI is slightly lower than the price change. The break-even sell price is buy price ÷ ((1 − buy fee) × (1 − sell fee)), and the price for a target return is the break-even price × (1 + target return).
Example: 1,000 USDT invested at 100 with a 0.1% fee buys 9.99 coins. Selling at 150 with a 0.1% fee returns 1,497.00 USDT, a profit of 497.00 USDT and an ROI of 49.70%, while the price rose 50%. The break-even sell price is about 100.20.
ROI here is not annualized. To compare holdings over different periods, use the CAGR calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How is ROI different from the price change?
The price change compares only the sell and buy prices. ROI compares what you received with what you paid, so it includes fees. With a 0.1% fee on each side, a 50% price rise gives an ROI of about 49.70%.
How do I calculate profit if I bought at several prices?
Find your average purchase price first, then enter it as the buy price together with your total amount invested. The average purchase price calculator combines up to 20 purchases, and the DCA calculator handles a fixed amount invested at regular intervals.
Is crypto profit taxable?
In many countries, selling, swapping or spending crypto at a gain can be a taxable event, but the rules differ by country and sometimes by holding period. This calculator does not estimate tax. Check the guidance of your tax authority or a qualified tax adviser.
