Measure the decline from a reference peak and the percentage gain needed to return to it. Use values in the same currency or unit.

Drawdown & recovery

Use the same currency for every price, fee and amount. Changing this label does not convert values.

Enter plain numbers using a dot for decimals, with no commas or currency signs. Up to 8 decimal places; each amount, price or quantity is limited to 1,000,000,000. Decimal arithmetic is used; results display up to 8, and return percentages display 2. Very small values may round to zero.

Why losses and recovery gains differ

Investment calculators ↗

A decline is measured from the larger starting value. Recovery is measured from what remains. That smaller denominator makes the required gain larger than the loss percentage.

Drawdown = (peak − current) ÷ peak × 100. Recovery gain = (peak − current) ÷ current × 100. A 20% decline needs a 25% gain; a 50% decline needs a 100% gain.

This compares two values; it does not find the maximum drawdown of a price history. Deposits, withdrawals, taxes, fees, dividends and inflation are not modeled. Account cash flows can change value without representing an investment gain or loss.

This is an arithmetic scenario, not a prediction of recovery, recovery time or a recommendation to increase risk. The entered reference peak may never be reached again.
