How much do I need to save each month?
P: Initial amount · T: Target ending amount · R: Assumed annual rate (%) · Y: Years · M: Required monthly contribution · F: Scenario ending balance ·
Set a target in future money, then subtract the future value of your initial amount. The remaining gap is funded by equal contributions at the end of every month. Each contribution starts earning growth in the following month.
r = R / 1200; n = 12 × Y; A = n (r = 0), ((1 + r)^n − 1) / r (r ≠ 0); M = max(0, (T − P × (1 + r)^n) / A); F = P × (1 + r)^n + M × A.
The monthly contribution is rounded upward to 8 decimal places. The displayed schedule uses that contribution; displayed balances are rounded, while the solver uses exact rational arithmetic.
This is a constant-rate planning scenario. It excludes fees, taxes, inflation, withdrawals and changing returns. The annual rate is nominal, not an effective annual yield. The target is tested at the end of the period, not at every earlier date.
A negative assumed rate erodes the balance. Contributions may still be needed even when today's initial amount equals or exceeds the target.
Example: a target of 12,000 over one year, starting with zero and assuming 0% growth, requires 1,000 at each month end. This is a fixed illustration, not market data.
This calculation does not guarantee an actual return or future outcome. Revisit the assumptions as your situation changes. No transactions are made.
