How ongoing fees affect compounding
Fees reduce the amount left invested. Compare fee rates using the same assumptions; this model does not assess investment quality or recommend a product.
Apply one-twelfth of the gross annual investment growth rate to the starting balance. From this updated balance, deduct its amount multiplied by one-twelfth of the annual fee rate. Add the monthly contribution last.
Hypothetical constant rates. This does not reproduce a fund’s daily expense accounting. Excludes taxes, sales charges, trading costs, spreads, inflation, withdrawals and performance fees. Reported investment performance may already be net of expenses; do not subtract the same costs twice.
Illustrative 20-year fee comparison
Hypothetical 10,000 starting units, no monthly contributions, 5% gross nominal annual return, monthly growth and fee deductions, 20 years. Currency-neutral amounts, not market data.
| Annual fee (%) | Scenario ending balance | Total modeled fee deductions | Reduction versus no-fee baseline |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | 27,126.40 | 0.00 | 0.00 |
| 0.25% | 25,803.30 | 835.40 | 1,323.10 |
| 0.5% | 24,544.47 | 1,623.54 | 2,581.93 |
| 1% | 22,207.37 | 3,067.75 | 4,919.03 |
| 2% | 18,177.30 | 5,489.50 | 8,949.10 |
The reduction includes the later growth or decline on money deducted as fees. It differs from the sum of modeled fee deductions.
